
Africa is the 2nd largest continent in the world, after Asia. Its surface area is 11.7 million square miles. The population of Africa in 2005 was 1,000,010,000 people. Its population density is about 80 people per square mile. There are 53 countries not counting Western Sahara. Central eastern Africa is beleived to be the origin of humans.
The climate ranges from tropical to subarctic in the mountains. The northern area is desert and arid. Its central and southern areas contain savannah plains and dense jungle and rainforest regions.
Islam is the largest religon in Africa followed by Christianity. 45 percent of the population are Muslim, 40 percent are Christian, and less than 15 percent are non religious or follow African religons. Africa is also the continent with the most aids deaths in the world.
Sub saharan Africa is more heavily infected by HIV and AIDS than any other regions in the world. An estimated 22 million people were living with HIV at the end of 2007 and 1.9 million people were infected with HIV that year. In the past year AIDS has killed an estimated 1.5 million people.
